kitchen reno part 1
Hello Hello!
We have a super exciting project going on at our house! I didn't want to post anything until I knew we were going to start...and we now are officially tackling our first kitchen diy renovation project! There is a reason that I have avoided showing you pictures of our kitchen....
Yikes!!! We bought this 1960s home three years ago and have not tackled the kitchen yet....as you can see! This may just be a very good example of how NOT to add pink to your home!
So, because we can not rip everything out at this point and replace with new, we are going to update this kitchen on a very tight budget. I'm not sure how long it will take us, but I can tell you that I'm uber-excited to show you the finished product!
Here's some of my inspiration images...and I'm so sorry I don't know the sources. I was using my phone when I was browsing and just screenshot the images and didn't take note of the sources....sorry!
So a few of the elements that I want to bring into my kitchen are:
* DIY concrete countertops ( we've been following the tutorial on A Beautiful Mess for our how-to)
* Herringbone patterned backsplash tile
* Open shelving
* Painted cabinets (so far I'm thinking white uppers and dark bottom cabinets)
* New hardware
* New light fixtures
We started with the countertops. We ripped the laminate off of the counter and the backsplash, and this past weekend we've been working on a diy concrete countertop!
We also built a waterfall edge on the end of the cabinets to add a little bit more spice! This is after the second layer of concrete and some light sanding....
Third layer is going on...
So at this point, our third layer of concrete is drying and then we're going to focus the most on sanding and getting it smooth and hopefully we won't need to apply a fourth coat. Honestly, I'm not sure how long this kitchen reno is going to take us but I'm just happy that we've started. And I can't wait to get my kitchen back! We had to remove the sink and the stove-top so we are basically camping our house at this point.
That's been our weekend! And our week, I'm sure, will be consumed with finishing our countertop and hopefully starting our backsplash!
YAY for change!
Hope you're having a wonderful day!

* I apologize for all the !!!! ...I must be a tad excited :)

I love that you chose concrete! I've been trying to think through what we'll do for counters on the new house, and I've been researching a lot about concrete, but really wanted to see it in person first. Now I can!! :-) - Natasha
ReplyDeleteThanks Natasha! You'll have to come over for coffee once we have them done and I have my kitchen back!
